Subscription Databases
An annotated list of databases restricted to student or staff use.
All of the databases listed below may be accessed from computers in the library and from offices or classrooms on campus. MPCC students and staff may access most of these databases from off-campus computers. Students should contact a librarian for information and passwords. After you have been given the password, click here to access the databases.

AccessScience An online version of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology that provides full access to 7100 articles, biographies of scientist, science news, guides to research, and related Web sites.

Books in Print with Reviews A bibliographic source to over 3 million books currently published or distributed in the United States. This online version contains reviews for most of the books listed and can be search by title, author, or subject.

Britannica Online The complete encyclopedia, all 44 million words that make it up, is available at this site. Search or browse for information on all topics, search 200,000 Web sites hand-picked by the editors, and view multimedia coverage of current topics. Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and Collegiate Thesaurus may also be found here.

College Source Online Over 14,000 college catalogs in "complete cover-to-cover, original page format" are available at this site. A tutorial is available if you need help with your search.

GPO Catalog

GPO Monthly Catalog Find out what your government is up to in this index to publications from the Government Printing Office. It includes references to congressional, executive, and judicial reports, hearing, and documents published since July 1976. Select GPO from the FirstSearch Database list.

Kiplinger Special Service Kiplinger provides concise, authoritative forecasts and advice on financial and business matters. Considerable source and background materials for business questions and research is available in this database.

Academic Universe

LexisNexis Academic combines in one database four main areas of research: news, business, legal, and medical. Use this database to search for company information, legal materials, medical information, and full text news stories going back more than 20 years. Literature Online This Reference edition is an "essential companion to literary study, updated every month and featuring the latest criticism, leading reference titles and biographies." Site features include an archives area that allows you to store information for future use and a online dictionary to find the meaning of terms and phrases that appear in the database. New

Oxford English Dictionary Access the complete text of all twenty-volumes of the OED's Second Edition and the three-volume Additions Series. Site also has information about current research and the history of the dictionary.

Proquest Nursing Journals contains complete information from nursing and related publications. Over 400 publications are available in full-text format with many of the articles dating from 1992 to the present date. Charts, tables, and diagrams are included with many of the articles. New

Wilson Biographies Plus Over 46,000 biographies and obituaries can be searched in this database. The articles are from volumes of Current Biography, the World Author Series, Nobel Prize Winners, World Artists, World Film Directors, American Reformers, and other biographical books.

World Almanac Facts and nothing but facts on cities, nations, crime, employment, education, sports, health, economy, business, and much more are found here. A good source for concise statistics and other information. Select World Almanac from the FirstSearch Database list.

World Data Analyst Site contains "statistics on demography, vital statistics, national economy, transportation and communication, education and health, and military for individual countries" along with tools to compare, rank, and compile statistics on countries.
