Index Databases
The subscription databases on the upper list on the right will provide quality, advertisement-free information. Most research should begin with a search for full-text articles in one or more of the first 5 databases listed on this page. If more information is needed, the other indexes may be used or use interlibrary loan to obtain articles found in ArticleFirst.
Print Magazines
This collection is used mostly for casual reading, although limited research is possible. A list of the titles and back issues in the collection is posted on the Internet and should be checked if certain articles are needed that can not be found in the full-text databases.


Full-text & Abstracted Magazines
Off campus use of the databases in this first section is limited to MPCC students and employees.
Students that want to use these databases from home should contact the library for a password.

ProQuest
A good database to begin research, Research Library indexes over 2600 magazines covering a wide range of subject matter with about 2/3 of the titles available in full-text. Nursing Journals contains over 550 leading nursing and related publications with some titles dating back to 1988. Both collections can be accessed through ProQuest.

Wilson OmniFile
Omnifile is a "multidisciplinary, 100% full-text database providing full text articles, with their accompanying indexing and abstracts." All of the 1,300 magazines indexed in Wilson Select are full text and coverage of some begins in 1994.

Lexis Nexis
combines in one database four main areas of research: news, business, legal, and medical. Use this database to search for company information, legal materials, medical information, and full-text news stories going back more than 20 years. See the overview page for a list of the contents of this database.

Electric Library
Electric library combines books, magazines, newspapers, television transcripts, photographs, and maps in one searchable database. This site is a good source for newspaper articles.

Opposing Viewpoints
In addition to over 400 essays on controversial political and social topics, the database contains 250 magazine titles that provide context and add relevance to the essays.

Free Full-text Magazines
The following sites may be freely used by anyone who has access to the Internet.
These sites are more limited in coverage of titles and dates than the sites listed above.

Directory of Open Access Journals
Full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals are available on this site. Over 2350 journals are in the directory, and 682 journals are searchable at the article level. Their goal is to be "comprehensive and cover all open access scientific and scholarly journals that use a quality control system to guarantee the content."

FindArticles
FindArticles has archives dating back to 1984 but not all of the articles are free. Site has a good directory structure, an advanced search feature, and the ability to limit a search to publication titles, dates, and free articles. They have assembled publications covering a wide range of subjects that are organized by major categories.

Free Full Text
This database cannot be searched at the article level, but it does provide "direct links to over 7000 scholarly periodicals which allow some or all of their online content to be viewed by anyone with Internet access for free (though some may require free registration)". Users that have a citation for a specific publication can easily find the articles that are free.

HighWire Press
Stanford University's HighWire Press "hosts the largest repository of free full-text life science articles in the world, with 1,402,957 free, full-text articles from 271 journals. ... to create a collection of the finest, fully searchable research and clinical literature online." Publications can be browsed by topic or articles searched using keywords, authors, or citations.

EEVL's Ejournal Search Engines
Use this site to search "the content of over 250 freely available full text ejournals in Engineering, Mathematics and Computing. Academic journals, professional and trade publications, and Society journals are covered." The ejournals and EEVL's catalog of 10,000 high quality Internet resources can be searched by keyword or phrase.

Magportal.com
MagPortal indexes general information magazines, most of which are full text with free access. Articles can be found using the keyword search engine or by browsing categories. A list of publications and the dates of articles indexed is available, but not all of the articles from an issue's print version may be online.

  Central
Site is "the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature." Articles can be located with a keyword or advanced search of their database or individual journal titles can be searched. The journals list includes the titles, dates of volumes, and how soon access is available after publication.

Free Medical Journals
Free Medical Journals is a directory of medical publishers' websites. Over 1450 links and a list of when articles may be accessed for free are found on the site, but it does not include a search engine for locating articles. Journal articles must be located through the publishers' sites.
