Services
The North Platte Community College Learning Resource Center is located in the southwest portion of the McDonald-Belton building adjacent to classrooms and the front foyer. Approximately 50 persons can be seated in the open study areas of the library. The LRC provides access to the Internet and e-mail. Users can access a listing of over 40,000 books, ebooks, and videos through the electronic card catalog. The LRC computers provide students with word processing programs plus classroom software. Computer access to data bases with thousands of magazine and journal titles is available. Hundreds of music CDs and audio tapes are available. The LRC provides students the opportunity to research topics through the Internet, card catalog, electronic databases, and interlibrary loan.
Service for Students
- Books, videos, and other things
- Most items in the LRC are sitting around waiting for your use. If you can't find the information you need, be sure to ask a librarian for help. The library staff is also here for your use.
- Audiovisual Equipment
- Equipment is available for on-campus use in class or committee presentations. If you need multimedia equipment, video recorders, or other items, ask a librarian for help.
- Copies
- Copies of books, papers, and electronic media can be made in the library. We do need to charge for the paper. Photocopies are 5 cents and computer printouts are 5 cents. If you want an electronic copy, bring your own flash drive and download Internet or other files to it.
- Scans
- A scanner is available to make electronic documents or image files from books, papers, or photographs. Bring your own flash drive and ask a librarian about this service.
- Interlibrary Loan
- If we don't have it, we can get it. Most books and many audiovisuals can be borrowed from other libraries. Tell a librarian what you need and in a few short days, you should have your book.
Policies
- A goal of the library is to provide all the information students need for their studies and research. To help meet this goal, the following polices have been adopted.
- Loans
- Most books and CDs are loaned for a four week period. Reference books and some reserve materials are checked-out for overnight or over weekend use.
- Renewals
- All materials, except for those on reserve and some interlibrary loan items, may be renewed. Contact a librarian if you want to renew a loan.
- Overdue Materials
- Students may be charged a fines on overdue DVDs or interlibrary loan items. Fine rates are as follows:
- DVDs and interlibrary loans are charged $1.00 per day late.
- Materials will not be loaned to students that have accumulated $20 in fines and/or have 7 items overdue.
- Students must pay all library fines before grades and transcripts will be sent to colleges or employers.
- Library Cards
- Any person borrowing materials from the library must have a valid student ID or library card. Library cards may be obtained at the circulation desk.
- MPCCA Students--Present your student identification card at the desk.
- Students at Other Colleges--If your college has agreed to the Reciprocal Borrowing Agreement of the Nebraska Library Association, you may obtain a library card by showing your student identification.
- Area Residents--Anyone living in the Mid-Plains Community College Area may have a library card by showing identification and giving the library your address and telephone number. You may borrow up to three items in any one loan period. Reference or reserve materials are only loaned to students. An invoice for the replacement costs plus a $5.00 fee will be sent for overdue materials. Unpaid invoices will be turned over to the appropriate authorities for collection.
- Use of the Internet
- Anyone using the library's computers to access the Internet must agree to conduct their activities according to the Acceptable Use Policy of Mid-Plains Community College. Computer use is on a first come basis, but computer use may be limited to one hour during periods of high demand.
- Email Accounts
- NPCC will issue email accounts to students. Contact the office or ask at the library if you did not get a Campus Web account. You may also set up a Web-based account using a computer on campus or your home computer. Information about Web-based email services and a list of free services is available on the Free Email Address Directory. Be sure to read the privacy policy and terms of service before you sign up for an account.
FAQs
- How can I get a student identification card?
- Request one at the circulation desk if you did not receive your ID during registration.
- Do I need to have a library card to use the LRC?
- No. You only need a library card if you want to borrow a book or some other materials or equipment. If you are not a student, ask a librarian how you may obtain library privileges.
- How can I get e-mail?
- You may use the library's computers to access your email. See email accounts in the Policies Section for information on setting up your own account.
- Can I access the library's databases on my home computer?
- Most of our databases can be accessed from off-campus computers:

- How can I access NetLibrary from my home computer?
- If you have a NetLibrary account, go to their homepage from your computer and sign in.
- You will then be able to search MPCC's collection of ebooks and read them online.
- An account can be easily created on computers in the libraries or classrooms on the campuses.
- From the NetLibrary homepage, click Create a Free Account and follow the directions.
- Online students that cannot visit one of the campuses may contact the library and request an account.
- Why isn't my teacher's name on the LRC's faculty page?
- Not all of the faculty have a home page. If your teacher told you he/she had one and it is not in our listing, please let us know.
- Can I get a book that is not in your catalog?
- Yes. Through interlibrary loan the library can find millions of books. Use WorldCat to find a book or give us some information about the book you need and we will borrow it for you from a library in the United States.
- Will I be charged for using an interlibrary loan book?
- You will not have to pay anything unless the sending library charges a fee. Most libraries do not charge for this service and you can tell us if you are willing to pay a small fee or not.
- What do you charge for photocopies?
- In order to pay for paper and maintenance on the photocopy machine, the library charges 5 cents for photocopies and 5 cents for computer printouts.
